China to Lead Energy Renewables in Three Years, WorldWatch Says

The world's fastest-growing major economy doubled production of wind turbines and solar cells in 2006, putting the country on track to overtake industry leaders in Europe, Japan and the U.S. in three years, the Washington-based research organization said in a release e-mailed yesterday. China will invest more than $10 billion in renewable energy capacity in 2007, second only to Germany. That compares with the $50 billion invested globally in 2006, the organization said. "If China's commitment to diversifying its energy supply and becoming a global leader in renewables manufacturing persists, renewable energy could provide over 30 percent of the nation's energy by 2050,'' WorldWatch said. China currently gets 8 percent of its energy from renewables. (...)
